Amendments to E.O. No. 209 Re: Lowering the Age of Majority from 21 to 18 Years
Republic Act No. 6809, enacted on December 13, 1989, lowers the age of majority in the Philippines from twenty-one to eighteen years. This amendment to the Family Code states that individuals are considered emancipated upon reaching eighteen, granting them full responsibility for civil acts, while still requiring parental consent for marriage until the age of twenty-one. The Act also repeals certain provisions of the Family Code and ensures that existing legal documents favoring minors remain unaffected. The law took effect upon publication in two newspapers of general circulation.
