Repeal of R.A. No. 427 Re: Prohibition Against the Possession and Exportation of Silver and/or Nickel Coins
Presidential Decree No. 118, issued on January 29, 1973, repeals Republic Act No. 427, which previously prohibited and penalized the possession and exportation of silver and nickel coins due to concerns over coin shortages. The decree, enacted by President Ferdinand E. Marcos, acknowledges that the current fiduciary coinage system effectively ensures a stable supply of small change. This legislative change reflects a broader effort to implement reforms in the Philippine social, economic, and political landscape. The decree takes immediate effect.
