Our Nation's losses to typhoons severely hamper our economic development. During the last five years (1972-1976) our country sustained a total damage to property due to typhoons and floods estimated at P1.65 B or an annual average of P330 M. This damage in the last five years does not include the staggering losses to lives and the countless injuries suffered by our people in the affected areas, not to mention indirect economic losses such as disruption of industry.
The annual damage suffered by the Philippines on account of adverse weather will continue to be a severe constraint on the socio-economic development of the country. It becomes imperative that typhoon moderation and flood forecasting should now be seriously looked into as a development strategy for socio-economic growth by our government. casia
