Declaring Gerardo de Leon and Carlos P. Romulo as National Artists

PROCLAMATION NO. 2207
DECLARING GERARDO DE LEON AND CARLOS P. ROMULO AS NATIONAL ARTISTS
WHEREAS, the Constitution provides for State patronage of the arts and letters;
WHEREAS, the category known as National Artists was created under Proclamation No. 1001 dated April 27, 1972, and since then, sixteen artists have been given this award for having excelled in their respective fields each producing a body of work that has enhanced the Filipino's cultural heritage;
WHEREAS, such pre-eminent achievements deserve the recognition and acknowledgment of our Government in pursuit of its policy of preserving and developing Filipino culture and national identity; and cdt
WHEREAS, the works of Gerardo de Leon and Carlos P. Romulo are reflective of this pre-eminent excellence, and of that national genius that contributes to the artistic heritage of the Philippines and of the world;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, FERDINAND E. MARCOS, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by law, and upon recommendation of the National Artist Awards Committee and pursuant to Proclamation No. 1001, as amended, do hereby declare Gerardo de Leon and Carlos P. Romulo as National Artists.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the Republic of the Philippines to be affixed.
