Republic Act No. 524, enacted on June 15, 1950, establishes the municipality of Opol in Misamis Oriental by separating the barrios of Opol, Igpit, and Lower Iponan from the municipality of Cagayan. The municipality of Opol is designated with its current barrio as the seat of government. Following the Act's approval, the President of the Philippines is tasked with appointing the first local officials, including the mayor, vice-mayor, and councilors, until regular elections are held. The law took effect upon its approval and was officially published in September 1950.

REPUBLIC ACT NO. 524
AN ACT CREATING THE MUNICIPALITY OF OPOL, PROVINCE OF MISAMIS ORIENTAL
SECTION 1. The barrios of Opol, Igpit, and Lower Iponan in the municipality of Cagayan, Province of Misamis Oriental, are hereby separated from said municipality and constituted into a new municipality to be known as the municipality of Opol, with the present barrio of Opol as the seat of the government. acd
SECTION 2. Upon the approval of this Act, the President of the Philippines shall appoint the first mayor, vice-mayor and councilors of the new municipality, who shall hold office until their successors shall have been elected and shall have qualified.
SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
