Amending Article 78 of the Civil Code Re: Marriage Between Muslims and Non-Christians
Republic Act No. 6268, enacted on June 19, 1971, amends the Civil Code of the Philippines regarding the solemnization of marriages between Muslims and non-Christians. It stipulates that thirty years after the Code's approval, all such marriages must comply with its provisions unless the President, upon the recommendation of the Commissioner of National Integration, issues a proclamation to apply certain provisions sooner. The Act took effect retroactively from June 18, 1969, but does not apply to marriages involving parties who were separated at the time of its approval. This amendment aims to integrate diverse marriage practices within the framework of Philippine law.
