PRESIDENTIAL DECREE NO. 1598
INCREASING THE SALARY OF THE SPEAKER OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY AND FIXING THE SALARY OF THE DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER
WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 8 (1), Art. VIII of the Constitution of 1973, the salary of the Speaker of the National Assembly is P75,000 per annum unless otherwise provided by law;
WHEREAS, the existing salary rate is not realistic in view of the complexity of the responsibilities and activities of the Legislative Branch of the Government and in view of the approved salary scale of Cabinet Ministers;
WHEREAS, the Deputy Prime Minister has duties and functions that are more complex and responsible than those of an ordinary Member of the Cabinet;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, FERDINAND E. MARCOS, President of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by the Constitution, do hereby decree and order:
SECTION 1. The Salary of the Speaker of the National Assembly is hereby increased to P85,000 per annum and the salary of Deputy Prime Minister is hereby fixed at P80,000 per annum.
SECTION 2. There is hereby appropriated out of any funds in the National Treasury not otherwise appropriated, such sum as may be necessary to pay the salaries provided in Section 1 hereof.
SECTION 3. This Decree shall take effect immediately.
DONE in the City of Manila, this 11th day of June, in the year of Our Lord, Nineteen Hundred and Seventy-Eight.
