Establishment of Five Additional Regional Protection Centers of the Bureau of Plant Industry
Letter of Instructions No. 987, issued on February 8, 1980, by President Ferdinand E. Marcos, mandates the establishment of five additional Regional Crop Protection Centers to enhance crop protection efforts across various regions in the Philippines. These centers aim to address significant food and commercial crop losses due to pests and diseases, which amount to substantial economic losses annually. They will focus on research, extension services, and information dissemination to support farmers in implementing effective pest control practices. The centers will operate under the Bureau of Plant Industry and are authorized to build facilities and procure necessary equipment, with tax exemptions for imports that are not available locally. This initiative is part of a broader government effort to boost food production and ensure food security in the country.
