Declaring as Official the Population Count of the Philippines by Province, City/Municipality and Barangay Based on the 2020 Census of Population and Housing Conducted by PSA

PROCLAMATION NO. 1179

DECLARING AS OFFICIAL THE POPULATION COUNT OF THE PHILIPPINES BY PROVINCE, CITY/MUNICIPALITY AND BARANGAY BASED ON THE 2020 CENSUS OF POPULATION AND HOUSING CONDUCTED BY THE PHILIPPINE STATISTICS AUTHORITY

WHEREAS, Republic Act (RA) No. 10625 or the "Philippine Statistical Act of 2013," provides that the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) shall be primarily responsible for all national censuses and surveys, sectoral statistics, consolidation of selected administrative recording systems, and compilation of national accounts;

WHEREAS, Section 6 (b) of RA No. 10625 mandates the PSA to prepare and conduct periodic censuses on population, housing, agriculture, fisheries, business, industry and other sectors of the economy;

WHEREAS, Batas Pambansa (BP) Blg. 72 (s. 1980) provides that an integrated national census of population and other related data shall be taken every ten (10) years beginning the year 1980, with the first day of May of every regular census year as the reference date;

WHEREAS, Executive Order No. 352 (s. 1996) directs the conduct of a census every ten (10) years primarily to update the population count at the national level down to the barangay level;

WHEREAS, Proclamation No. 928 (s. 2020) declared the month of May 2020 as "National Census Month";

WHEREAS, the 2020 Census of Population and Housing was conducted by the PSA in September 2020 with 01 May 2020 as reference date; and

WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 8 of BP Blg. 72, the final population count as determined from the processed census returns shall be considered official for all purposes only upon proclamation by the President;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, RODRIGO ROA DUTERTE, President of the Republic of the Philippines, by virtue of the powers vested in me by the Constitution and existing laws, do hereby declare as official for all purposes the results of the 2020 Census of Population, placing the total population of the Philippines as of 01 May 2020 at 109,035,343 persons, as shown in the "2020 Census of Population and Housing by Province, City/Municipality and Barangay," attached hereto and made an integral part hereof.
