Amendments to R.A. No. 1162 Re: Expropriation of Landed Estates
Republic Act No. 2342, enacted on June 20, 1959, amends certain provisions of the earlier Republic Act No. 1162 concerning the expropriation of landed estates or haciendas, particularly in the City of Manila and Quezon City. It authorizes the expropriation of lands leased to tenants for at least ten years, provided there are a minimum of fifty houses on the property. The Land Tenure Administration is tasked with initiating the necessary expropriation proceedings in court. Ejectment proceedings against tenants of lands set for expropriation are suspended until June 30, 1960, unless a complaint has already been filed. The Act aims to facilitate the subdivision and sale or lease of these lands at reasonable terms.
