Amendment to R.A. No. 938 Re: Regulation of Certain Places of Amusement by Local Boards and Councils
Republic Act No. 979, enacted on May 21, 1954, amends the earlier Republic Act No. 938, granting municipal and city councils the authority to regulate or prohibit certain places of amusement, including nightclubs and bars, within their jurisdictions. It specifies that such establishments cannot be located within 500 meters of public buildings, schools, hospitals, and churches. Additionally, it exempts establishments operating under Commonwealth Act No. 485 and those that were pre-war establishments, provided they resumed operations before the Act's approval. Any conflicting laws or executive orders are repealed, and the Act takes effect immediately upon approval.
