Amendment to R.A. No. 401 (Condonation of Unpaid Interest from January 1, 1942 to December 31, 1945)
Republic Act No. 919, enacted on June 20, 1953, amends previous legislation concerning the condonation of unpaid interest on debts originating from the period between January 1, 1942, and December 31, 1945. It stipulates that if a debtor was unable to pay due obligations or interest during that time due to the creditor's assets being controlled by enemy forces, and if payments made were believed to be valid, those interests would be condoned. Additionally, if the debtor voluntarily pays the entire pre-war principal obligation by December 31, 1954, any interest accrued from January 1, 1946, until the payment date will also be condoned. The law aims to alleviate the financial burden on debtors affected by wartime circumstances.
