The Professional Regulatory Board of Optometry in the Philippines adopted Resolution No. 001-06 on February 21, 2006, which establishes syllabi for the subjects included in the Optometry Licensure Examinations. This resolution is in accordance with Republic Act No. 8050 and R.A. 8981, granting the Board the authority to determine the examination content and structure. The syllabi outline theoretical subjects, which account for 60% of the exam, and clinical skills assessments, comprising 40%. Effective from July 2006, this resolution supersedes previous regulations and will be disseminated to relevant educational institutions and organizations for implementation.

PROFESSIONAL REGULATORY BOARD OF OPTOMETRY RESOLUTION NO. 001-06

ADOPTION AND PROMULGATION OF SYLLABI FOR THE SUBJECTS IN THE OPTOMETRY LICENSURE EXAMINATIONS

WHEREAS, Sections 12 and 18 of Republic Act No. 8050, known as the "Revised Optometry Law of 1995", vests in the Board of Optometry the power to prescribe the scope and prepare the contents of the Optometry Licensure Examinations;

WHEREAS, the Board prescribed in Section 26, Rule V of Resolution No. 03, Series of 1997, known as the "Rules and Regulations Governing the Examination and Registration of Optometrists and the Regulation of the Practice of Optometry", the following theoretical subjects with their corresponding percentage weights in the Optometry Licensure Examinations:

WHEREAS, Sec. 9 (h) of R.A. 8981, known as the "PRC Modernization Act of 2000", empowers the Board:" . . . to prepare, adopt, and issue syllabi or tables of specification in consultation with the academe; determine and prepare the questions which shall be strictly within the scope of the syllabus or table of specifications of the subject for examination . . .";

WHEREAS, the adoption of a syllabus in each subject for licensure examination in Optometry is required by Memorandum Circular No. 8, Series of 1992; Memorandum Circular No. 92-03, Series of 1993; and Memorandum Circular No. 93-04, Series of 1993 of the Professional Regulation Commission;

WHEREAS, the preparation of the syllabi was carried out in consultation with various schools, colleges, and universities offering the course of Optometry, and the Integrated Professional Association of Optometrists (IPAO),Inc. and in accordance with the curriculum of the Optometry course approved by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED);and

WHEREAS, the test questions to be formulated for the Optometry Licensure Examinations shall be based on the various concepts, principles, and applications included in the syllabi;

NOW, THEREFORE, the Board hereby RESOLVES, AS IT HEREBY RESOLVED, to adopt, issues, and promulgate the Syllabi of the Subjects for Examination in the Optometry Licensure Examinations, appearing in Annex "A" for the theoretical subjects and Annex "B" for the performance skills areas as integral parts of this Resolution.

The herein Resolution which supersedes Resolution No. 04, Series of 1997 shall be implemented in the July, 2006 and subsequent optometry licensure examinations. aSTAHD

This Resolution shall take effect after fifteen (15) days following its full and complete publication in the Official Gazette or any newspaper of general circulation in the Philippines. Let copies of this Resolution be furnished to the deans/heads of schools, colleges, or universities, offering a course in Optometry as well as the Presidents of the Accredited Professional Organization (APOs) and non-APOs for dissemination to all concerned.
