Safety Record Cited Bechtel Overseas Corporation, Chiyoda Corporation of Japan and Daelim Construction of Japan awarded separate citations to EEI Corporations for safety records in various projects without lost-time accidents (LTA). Bechtel, one of the leading large-scale engineering and contracting corporations worldwide, gave the safety citation to EEI for its Quezon Power Plant project in Mauban Quezon after it attained 6.5 million man-hours without LTA. EEI has been contracted to undertake civil works, piping works; electro-mechanical construction and the installation of turbines for the 600 megawatt power plant. EEI also achieved 4 million man-hours without LTA in its Petron Bataan Refinery expansion project with Daelim Construction. Chiyoda Corporation, on the other hand, recognized it for its electrical and instrumentation construction project in the MTBE methanol plant in Qatar. "Safety is a paramount and continuing concern of the organization and its people," EEI president and chief operating officer Samson C. Lazo said. He noted that EEI is a primary proponent of safety management because of its key importance not only in saving lives and property, but also because it is a part of the total quality and productivity commitment of the company. The company a publicly listed corporation and one of the largest general contracting firms in the country accomplished a total of 32.8 million man-hours zero LTA in the first semester of the year. It conducts continuous safety education training and evaluation, drills for fire, earthquake, and other emergencies for all project personnel and safety management seminars for project managers and supervisors. EEI has also completed several large-scale projects without any accidental injury, property damage or fires. "This is a significant achievement. in light of the attendant risks associated with the construction business," Lazo stressed. The company conducts periodic safety audits to assure conformance to standards. The zero-accident projects included the 600 megawatt Sual Power plant in Pangasinan. the Philippine Geothermal Tiwi (Albay) power plant, the Masinloc power plant in Zambales and the Philips semiconductor plant in Calamba. Laguna. cdlex EEI is currently involved in the construction of landmark high-rise property and industrial projects. It is the general contractor of the Linden Suites in Ortigas Center and the Robinsons' Place Residences in Ermita, Manila. It is also constructing the RCBC Plaza in Makati in joint venture with the Walter Bau of Germany and Concrete Construction of Australia and the Pacific Plaza Towers and Insular Life Corporate Center with SAE International of France.
