September 17, 1998 PSE CIRCULAR FOR BROKERS NO. 2170-98 SUBJECT : Metro Pacific Corporation Metro Pacific Corporation ("MPC") clarified to the Exchange, in a letter dated September 16, 1998, a news article published in the September 14, 1998 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer which reported that the company is among those preparing for a takeover of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company. MPC, in its letter, explained that: "This is to advise that the Philippine Daily Inquirer article of September 14, 1998, which was enclosed with your letter, is incorrect in stating that Metro Pacific "is among those preparing to cast their predatory nets over utility firm [PLDT]." As the source of the statement in the article concerning Metro Pacific was cited as "the market grapevine", it should be considered as nothing more than mere rumor and speculation."
