CADP Reduces Wastewater Flowrate by 90%

September 16, 1998 PSE CIRCULAR FOR BROKERS NO. 2148-98 CADP REDUCES WASTEWATER FLOWRATE BY 90% Publicly-listed sugar refiner Central Azucarera Don Pedro (CADP) registered marked improvements in its waste minimization program under the Industrial Environmental Management Project (IEMP), effectively minimizing wastewater from its refinery in Nasugbu, Batangas. The program is being implemented through a multi-phased, systematic procedure for identifying, selecting and implementing waste minimization and improved waste management. As a result, the company has been able to reduce wastewater from its raw sugar factory and sugar refinery from 20,000 m 3 per day (CMD) with 15,300 kg biological oxygen demand (BOD) load to 2,000 CMD with 4,900 kg BOD load. cdt The reduction was due to the steps taken in all aspects of production from control of spills, tank overflows, early repair of piping, valve and pump leaks and overall good housekeeping in the plant. "The significant reduction in effluents was realized through the concerted efforts of CADP personnel to implement the pollution management solutions from the Pollution Management Appraisal conducted in March 1993." said, Ramon Picornell, Senior Vice President for Operations. At present, CADP is using the state-of-the-art P50 M Activated Sludge/Extended Aeration System with upstream Sessil Trickling Filter, which is regarded as the best in the country. The facility was put on-line in July 1998, working in conjunction with the company's existing wastewater treatment plant employing lagooning. For its efforts in pollution control, CADP has received recognition as early as in 1994 when it received the "Most Environment Friendly Sugar Factory Award" from the Philippine Sugar Millers Association and the Association of Integrated Millers (PSMA-AIM).
