August 19, 1999 PSE CIRCULAR FOR BROKERS NO. 2065-99 Philippine Stock Exchange PSE Center, Exchange Road Ortigas Center, Pasig City Attention: Ms . Luisa W . Buenaventura Supervisor, Disclosure Dept . Gentlemen : In reference to your facsimile dated August 19, 1999 regarding the news items in the Business World and Philippine Daily Inquirer entitled "BPI board approves merger talks with FEBTC" and "BPI, FEBTC nearing mega-merger", respectively, please be informed that at present there are no official talks of merger with Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI). As stated by FEBTC's President. Mr. O.V. Espiritu, in the said articles "There are no negotiations going on. The board is not in discussion with anybody. The board has not appointed any negotiator" and that he himself is not negotiating with anybody.
