January 28, 1999 PSE CIRCULAR FOR BROKERS NO. 153-99 January 27, 1999 Ms. Eileen M. Lacorte Philippine Stock Exchange, Inc. PSE Center, Exchange Road Ortigas Center, Pasig City Dear Ms. Lacorte : Thank you for allowing us to clarify the situation regarding the newspaper article entitled "Banks Give PLDT, Metro until Friday for Piltel Guarantee" that appeared in Malaya today. Please be informed that Metro Pacific Corporation ("MPC") does not have an interest in Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. ("PLDT"), much less Pilipino Telephone Company ("Piltel") First Pacific Company Limited, together with its Philippine affiliates however, are common shareholders in both MPC and PLDT As such, MPC, PLDT and Piltel are separate and distinct companies with different shareholders, and assets and obligations that are legally separate and independent of each other. MPC's bankers and creditors are fully aware of this situation and remain supportive of the Group's strategic plans. The newspaper article is, therefore, erroneous and speculative. Should you need further clarification on the matter, please do not hesitate to give us a call. Yours truly, (SGD.) CORAZON P. GUIDOTE Group Vice President Corporate Communication & Investor Relations
