The merger was designed to give the combined operation a new lease on life by increasing ore reserves and exploiting synergistic benefits to drive down costs by reducing pay limits and increasing mining flexibility. The Company's underground and surface operations are on the western side of the Witwatersrand Basin and range over a distance of 160 kilometers from Johannesburg to Klerksdorp. It has a total measured and indicated resource of some 78 million ounces of gold and has a processing capacity of more than 20 million tonnes per year, producing more than 600,000 ounces of gold.
